A 6 foot fence along the back line in Medford and the same fence in Huntington Station go through different town rules. Suffolk’s towns each set their own heights and permit triggers, so the county license is the only part that is the same from one end of the county to the other.

Brookhaven’s fence code diagram allows 4 feet on the property line without a permit and 6 feet with one. Huntington asks for a permit at 6 feet and over, with a survey no older than 6 months. Islip’s building division hands out the state pool barrier rules and takes permit calls at 631-224-5466. Incorporated villages can set their own rules, so check with yours if you live in one.

Before anyone measures, get the company’s Suffolk license number and look it up on the county search. The license guide covers what the contract has to say. Material by material, the fence pages cover chain link, vinyl and gates.

  2. 2.How tall can my fence be in Brookhaven without a permit?
